The Great Albert Pujols vs. Hanley Ramirez Debate

Last year I was given the distinction of having the 1st overall pick in my Fantasy Baseball Keeper League.  I didn't find out until less than an hour before the draft and I obviously had a very complex decision to make.  I was heavily leaning towards Albert Pujols because we know the sheer legendary offensive clinic he's guaranteed to put on every season, but something convinced me to select HanRam instead.

First, I took into consideration that there's a major drop-off at SS after him, that he's 3-4 younger than Pujols with even a higher ceiling.  Plus, HanRam's uncanny ability to steal 30-40 bases even made him more appealing.

Did I end-up regretting my decision?  No, because I ended-up drafting Prince Fielder in the 2nd round and he also hasn't fully reached his untapped potential.

The question is….Who do you consider should be the #1 ranked overall player?  I've been speculating about this quite of bit and feel they are both even… It's difficult to compare the 2…..What do you all think?

I say Pujols. I love both, obviously, but Pujols has the ability to make every other player look silly during any given season. Will he have that HUGE HR season this year? Who knows, but I don't want to be the owner watching that season knowning I could have had him. I grab Pujols no matter what. But anyone that knows me knows I'd trade up my second and third round picks so that I can land both with back-to-back 1-2 picks :)

Haha if you are able to get Pujols and Hanley that is just sick.

I'd have to take Pujols over Hanley with the first pick because he WILL put up the better numbers.

As I've said before the scoring of your league could effect/affect? this decision and type of league (dynasty/redraft) I considered Hanley, but ended up with Albert in a dynasty league because I chickened out at the last second. If your league rewards say 2 pts per stolen base etc. Hanley could end up being more valuable, and considering the depth at 1b you could argue to get the top of a very short list at SS and arguably the 1a or best player in baseball.

I'm one for the gamble and upside pick too so that may sway the decision. In the end you gotta go with your gut. My gut says Hanley this year, but my guts been known to have S**t for brains.

It's always a better draft when the No. 1 isn't clear cut, IMO

I would like to revisit this thread…It seems Pujols is beginning to experience chronic back problems which could very well detract away some of his long-term value.

I had ruptured disks in my back and required 2 subsequent surgeries (last being a Lumbar Spinal Fusion), and even after 10-years after what is supposed to be a “cure-all” procedure, I’m still enduring severe pain (especially in cooler weather)….

Obviously, we can counter that HanRam needs to have another solid season in order to further legitimize him as being touted the top over-all pick….

I’m still inclined to lean toward HanRam regardless based on his speed and upside and I’m just fearing that Pujols might actually be on the decline, even before he hits his prime……
