OfflineKeeping in line with the all bust and all surprise team….here is a roster of your 2011 fantasy all stars…….
C – Victor Martinez – VMart is killing it this year with a .322 average with 38 RBI and 28 runs. Only 6 HR, but beating his closest competitor (Avila) in average, RBI, and runs scored (While Avila takes HR and SB categories). It was a close call…but in the 5 main fantasy categories, VMart wins 3-2.
1B – Adrian Gonzalez – This one was close enough I actually went through and did a little all star vote on my own (I actually looked at the top 5 or so in each categeory and assigned points for where they ranked)…I came up with a close call…Gonzalez with 24, Pujols and Votto with 20, Fielder with 18, Teixeira with 14, and Cabrera, Konerko and Howard all with 10. So…Gonzo it is!
2B – Robinson Cano – Another tough call between Cano and Rickie Weeks. Weeks has more runs and steals, Cano more homers and RBI, and they are both hitting .290. I gave the edge to Cano because he leads all 2B in 2 categories (HR, RBI) and Weeks only leads in 1 category (Runs).
3B – Jose Bautista – Well…I didn't want to give it to him at this spot since he's playing RF…but this position is a mess in 2011 and he qualifies. Oh…and he's raking. So there you go.
SS – Jose Reyes – Maybe the most exciting player in baseball this year. He's batting .348 with 51 runs scored and 23 steals. Lacking in power/RBI numbers…but…he's a top of the order guy, and he's dominating his position this year.
LF – Ryan Braun – He does it all. 15 homers, 16 steals, 53 runs, 51 RBI, .312 average. Enough said.
CF – Matt Kemp – See Braun….another jack of all trades. 20 HR, 16 SB, 47 runs, 56 RBI, .335 average.
RF – Jay Bruce – finally living up to all that potential and hype he was saddled with as a teenager. Yeah…this could and should be Bautista, but he's our guy at 3B. Bruce has 17 HR, 48 RBI, 46 runs, 5 SB, and is hitting .282. He edges out comeback player of the year Lance Berkman for this slot. Barely.
Utility – Curtis Granderson – Since we can plug anyone into this spot…I thought Mr. Granderson deserved the nod. 59 runs, 52 RBI, 21 HR, 10 SB, .285 AVG. He and Kemp are interchangeable between this slot and CF.
SP – I'll go with three guys here….Jered Weaver, Justin Verlander, and Cole Hamels. These three have been completely dominant. The highest ERA among this group is 2.66 and highest WHIP is 0.92….25 wins between the three of them, and 298 K's. These guys are scary good.
RP - I'll take two here…Franisco Cordero has 14 saves, 3 wins, a 1.67 ERA and 0.87 WHIP. Across the board dominance. My #2 reliever will be Mr. Joel Hanrahan. Who would have thought a Pittsburgh closer would be on the list? But with 19 saves, a 1.39 ERA, and 0.99 WHIP, he deserves it.
Feel free to argue and tell me how stupid some of my picks are…..let's hear you make a case for some guys who were left off the roster!
OfflineNot much to argue here…
If it were real technical, I'd drop Bautista to RF like he is really playing. Then I guess you'd have to go A-Rod at 3B. Beltre would garner some votes.
That would drop Jay Bruce off my list.
Agree with the utility going to Curtis Granderson, but i sure wish I could Jacoby Ellsbury in there.
And since it's fan voting (right?), I'd put The Beard, ie, Brian Wison in as one of the closers. He does have 5 wins to go along with an MLB leading 20 saves. Even with the higher ERA and WHIP, he is just too good for the game!
Nice job as always Bob.
OfflineYeah I had a hard time placing Bautista at 3B – BUT – since it is fantasy….I figured why not? I'm using him at 3B in a league….if you can use a guy at a weak position – you do it right? So I tried to make the best all-star team possible along that line of thinking.
I had a hard time leaving Ellsbury out – a guy I enjoy watching play and who is having a great season…but just couldn't put him in the mix.
OfflineI"ll pick my faves off your list
1st Base: Adrian Gonzalez (Adgro), 9 times out of ten any Padres Superstar who leaves or gets traded turns into a MegaStar, in San Diego it's known as the Friars Blessing, Winfield, Ozzie Smith, Roberto Alomar, Sheffield, McGriff and on and on. Adgro's an absolute hitting machine. With the depth at 1st I like all your runner ups especially Paul Konerko, every time I check my teams stats (the 13s) he's always smacking homers.
RF: Jay Bruce (The Boss) has had a gracefully awesome season so far, again it seems like every I check out my team (Madres) he's done something good. He has been in a mini slump in the last few weeks.
Everything else looks great as usual Bob, you know what's happening.
PS I would have added Josh Beckett to the SPs, but I don't think he's better than the ones you listed.
