Buy Low candidates

In one of my leagues I was offered two different trades for Carl Crawford – Adrian Beltre for Crawford straight up & Justin Upton for Crawford straight up. I still believe in Crawford and declined both trades. But that did get me thinking – who are some buy low candidates?

Almost anyone on the Red Sox is a buy low candidate…Crawford, Ellsbury, etc.  Youkilis is starting to rake though…so that ship may have sailed.

Adam Dunn comes to mind….he just came out and said he probably came back about a week too soon from his appendectomy.  I'd look for him to turn it around soon.

Pedro Alvarez could be someone to look at….he just had a hell of a week but his overall numbers still look terrible…he's got enough talent I'd consider looking at him.  I'd look for Alvarez to wind up hitting closer to .260 this season (he's barely over .200 now) with good power numbers.

Some other guys are Ian Kinsler, Jorge Posada, Dan Uggla, and maybe Chone Figgins.

Figgins has a terrible BABIP (batting average on balls in play).  That's got to even out at some point…right now it's at .173, for his career, it's .334 – I'd look for him to start hitting more balls away from the fielders and start getting some hits (and steals).

Uggla's having similar bad luck this season….his BABIP is only .181 vs. a .298 career number.

Well, if I would have seen this post before last night I would have said go after Ben Zobrist but after last nights performance (7-10 with 10 RBI's, 3 2Bs, 2 HRs, and a SB) I bet the buy-low oppertunity is closed.

Aside from that, I bet Jay Bruce may be availible at a low cost but he too is starting to show signs that he is heating up so you have to get him before his value increases.

Although you have him, Carl Crawford. Lets face it… this guy will hit. Although he has had a horrible start, he will get it together and pull out a decent year.

On the pitching side, I might go after Matt Garza, his K rate has gone up and idn how this guy is losing games. If and when the Cubs heat up, he will start getting W's.

The only other guy that comes to mind is Max Scherzer. He has been off to a slow start. Seeing his .358 BABIP (Batting average on balls in play) he is prolly getting a little unlucky and hopefully that will go down as the year goes on.

Some good calls here…I don't think Scherzer qualifies though??  He's 4-0 with 30 K and a 3.19 ERA….I don't think he's struggled much although he did have one bad outing that I remember.

Oh wow. I'm sorry. I heard about a pitcher who had a high BABIP and was off to a shaky stary so when I looked up the BABIPs I kinda assumed it was him. It was actually Wandy Rodriguez (.355 BABIP, 1-3, 5.40 ERA). I think Wandy is normally a slow started so you might wanna look into him to see if his owner is frustrated. Again, Sorry about that mistake.

No need to apologize!  I know I was scared when Scherzer got rocked (it might have been his first game) as I have him on a few teams.  But he pulled it together pretty quick.  Wandy is one to buy low for sure…he's better than what he's done so far.  Good call there!

Good stuff guys.  Any thoughts now that a couple more weeks have gone by?

Is Hanley Ramirez a buy low opportunity?  His stats say so, but would anyone really trade him beings that he was going top 2 or 3 in drafts?

Injured guys can sometimes be had, especially from an owner who has a slew of the hated "DL" next to more than one or two of his players.  Anyone thinking of making a play for Chase Utley?  I got him off waivers in one league from an impatient owner.  If he comes back close to the Utley of old, I have quite a steal on my hands….IF.

Probably too late for E. Longoria or Z. Greinke I imagine….   But Ryan Zimmerman and Pablo Sandoval are both weeks away.

I'm thinking J. Heyward may be a candidate still.  Gotta think he'll heat up sometime soon….

Anyone else with thoughts?

another buy low guy….Mike Aviles.  You could probably get someone to just toss him in as an extra – but he hits.  He got off to a horrible start, but is now hitting .260 with 5 homers, 26 RBI, and 8 steals.  He hasn't played everyday because the Royals like Getz's defense at 2B….but at some point, they are going to have to get past that, as Getz cannot hit.  At all.  Aviles should get more playing time moving forward as he continues to produce…and he probably qualifies at 2B/3B in your league…so he's got some roster flexibility for you as well.  Just a sneaky guy to have on your roster.  If you're set at both 2B/3B…get Aviles and use him when one of those guys has an off day, gets hurt, or slumps.

Again, excellent advice Bob.  You'll notice I nabbed Aviles in our xtreme league as soon as the league came on line.  Got him on a number of teams doing exactly what you advised.

Getz had another miserable night at the plate…he's going to play himself out of his position and Aviles will be playing everyday soon, in my opinion.  Getz will become a defensive replacement for Aviles….his bat is too solid to keep sitting and moving around to various positions.
