OfflineAs we all know, last season the Giants GM cobbled together just enough pieces for the (horrible) Giants offense to support their wonderful pitching, and thus win it all. Of course, it didn't hurt that the Marlins gave up on Cody Ross, whom Sabean signed and went on for some fun fantasy relevance over the last month of the season. And the same applied to Pat Burrell.
Sabean has started the tinkering process with the signing of Jeff Keppinger a couple of days ago. For Giants fans watching the Black Hole at Shortstop this season, it was a welcome signing. Jeff is sporting a 22-4-20-0-.307 line in 163 AB's so far, and if he stays near .300 the rest of the way will help out the Giants immensely. Might not mean much for you fantasy wise, unless you are in NL only or a very deep mixed league with no SS's available on the waiver wire though.
With Sandoval regaining All-Star form at 3B, Brandon Belt supplying hope for production at 1B (where have you gone Aubrey Huff?), and the hope of the return of .300 hitting Freddie Sanchez to 2B, the Giants seem set at the infield for a repeat run.
Will they try to snag a harder hitting catcher to replace Buster Posey now? Or look to the outfield? I'm guessing the outfield. Giants pitchers don't seem to be suffering with the current tandum of Whiteside and Stewart. But hitting in the outfield, yuck. Nate Schierholz has emerged as a nice surprise (and is hitting .340 the past month!), but after that it sucks with Huff at .232, Torres at .235, Rowand at .238, and Burrell at .233 and on the DL. Last years wonderkind, Cody Ross, is a respectable .260…when he isn't hurt.
So look for an OF add here. Beltran would be nice, but the Mets want a Top-Tier prospect in return and the Giants don't like to do that. I wish they'd dangle Jonathan Sanchez, alas, he probably is a much poorer version of Johan Santana. So look for a mid-tier OF grab in the next 2 weeks, one who may give savvy owners a short little run of relevance.

OfflineI'll have to get back to ya on that one Bob. I know at the big league level, Jonathan Sanchez could be dangled with the emergence of Vogelsong (and the frustration over Sanchez' control issues). I also know that the Giants seem to be deep at middle relief, but I imagine that doesn't excite you much.
I'm guessing you know more than I do regarding the minor league levels. The Giants seem to be producing talent down there, so I imagine there is a prospect or two. But for someone like Melky, I can't imagine Sabean giving up a top-tier guy.
OfflineUgh. Just looked at the stats for the AAA Fresno Grizzlies, the affiliate of the SF Giants. To put it mildly, it looks like the cupboard is bare. I don't know how Sabean is gonna pull off anything from this level. The "best" pitchers have ERA's in the mid 4's and the WHIP's are 1.45 at best.
He may have something in the AA or single A pipeline that other teams might be interested in, if they're willing to wait on development. That actually seems like the Royals way. But other than Sanchez, I don't think you're looking at any kind of immediate help from the Giants.
