This was the hardest award to present so far, because gosh darn it, you just don't give a rookie of the year award to a relief pitcher.  But we did.  Most would probably go with an every day player.  And Mark Trumbo and Eric Hosmer present real intriguing arguments.  But although they have good stats, their performance wasn't other worldly like Kimbrel's was.  I mean, how many pitchers have a K rate like that.  127 strikeouts in only 77 innings!? Wow!  And he did set a record for saves by a rookie with 46.

Trumbo had 29 HR's and 87 RBI.  But everything else was pedestrian.  Only 65 runs scored, 9 stolen bases, and a very average average of .254.  It just doesn't cry out you know?

Hosmer, same thing.  Good BA of .293, but only 19 HR and 78 RBI.  Also low on runs with 66 and had 11 SB.  Again, nothing that cries out, "look at me, this is incredible stuff" compared to everyone else.

Personally I would of loved to have given it to Desmond Jennings, but he only had 247 AB's.  Double his numbers and he would of had 88 runs, 20 HR's, 50 RBI, and 40 SB.  But he only hit .259 also.  And, he didn't have double his stats, only half of what I just wrote.  Kimbrel, he had ALL 46 of those saves and ALL of those 127 K's, and a 2.10 ERA with a 1.04 WHIP to boot.

I'm giving it to the kid.

Trumbo played in like 20 more games than Hosmer if I'm not mistaken….by that rationale, I'd say Hos had the better year.  He still hit homers at a lower pace, but was only 9 RBI behind, scored more runs, had more steals, and a way better average….had he played the same amount of time as Trumbo, I'm pretty confident he would have looked more impressive.  Hosmer also had more triples and was just behind in doubles…so he would have clipped him there too.  Plus he's 5 years younger…

Maybe it's just the KC fan in me justifying how much better Hos is than Trumbo!

I can't argue though with Kimbrel as ROY….
