Couldn't help the headline.

We here at Fantasybaseballxtreme were invited to participate in a game called "Game of Gurus."  They challenge players to go up against fantasy baseball sites.  If you beat the "guru" you win cash prizes (after you lay some down of course).

Each team is given an imaginary million dollar budget to fill 8 position spots.  As you can imagine, the best players are costly, say $175,000.  So, to fill your team, you have to think about it a little bit.

It's too late to get in on our first game, as I didn't have a chance to get in to the game until yesterday, but we will be up again in 5 weeks.  Until then, you can check out their site at fantazzle.com if you are into this kind of gaming.  We'll keep you posted here on how we did.

Oh, our line-up this first time around:

C:    A. Avila      $85,000 The past 2 weeks he has 3 HR and 9 RBI.  Not to mention no catchers are doing anything good lately.  If you are going to spend low on a position, catcher is the place to do it.

1B:  L. Berkman  $115,000 A no-brainer.  A low cost for the #1 player in fantasy so far.

2B:  R. Cano   $160,000 Cano is the #20 overall ranked player in fantasy and has 6 home games this week, 3 with rival Boston.

3B:  M. Young    $110,000 Batting .314 with 2 HR and an RBI a day with 14 the past 2 weeks.  Plus, I like guys who are professional through everything thrown at them, as was Mr. Young through the off-season.  I think he has a "I'll show them" attitude going right now.

SS:  J. Reyes   $125,000 Three games at Colorado, and 3 games at Houston should add up to fantasy goodness.  It was hard not to add David Wright, Ike Davis, etc. to this list, but in these kind of games too many guys from one team can kill your chances.

OF:  M. Kemp    $150,000 One of fantasy's top performers, and he has 7 games this week.

OF:  A. Eithier    $125,000 What was that about too many guys from one team?  Yes, BUT, a 7 game week and he just started his next 30 game hitting streak with a HR yesterday.  I'll take the chance…

OF:  J. Ellsbury  $100,000 One of my pre-season guys because of his low ADP has been paying off lately with a .393 average the past 2 weeks.

Not a bad line-up for $970,000!  Want to hand it to Fantazzle; some of those football games that are similar to this don't give you near the quality across the board in your line-up.  I like that I'm not forced to take the equivalent of a 2nd string RB or third rate defense like I have in some football games.  Good job Fantazzle!

Well…we've started out slowly.

Day one had us in 17th place.  So much for being a "guru."

A couple guys had good Tuesdays however, and we climbed 5 spots to 12th place.

Too early to evaluate though, as most of you know.  Baseball is the sport in fantasy where everything can turn on one day.

OUCH!  After 3 days, we've fallen back down to 17th place again.

Cano, Berkman, and Reyes have all flamed out this week with a measly 4 points each.  Ellsbury is not helping with just 6.

This just confirms that 1)  I shouldn't gamble, and 2) You have to be particularly skilled to do the weekly game.  It's looking like I am a "long-term" player.  Which actually goes with my history over the past 5 years.  I tend to chip away at you all year and usually catch people by the end.

So Bob, Roy, Achiever, etc., I may be looking for some advice in 4 weeks when we are due up again.

If they let us stay, lol.

OUCH again.  In total transparency, I bring you the news that I just suck at the weekly game.

One would think that having A. Avila, L. Berkman, R. Cano, J.Reyes, and A. Eithier in your line-up for the week would produce fantasy goodness.

But what a train wreck!

They are a combined 10 for 50 with one measly Home Run.

Needless to say, the website is gonna lose some money on this one.

They may not ask me back.

BUT, let this be a lesson (you always learn something).  This is the nature of fantasy BASEBALL, much more so than the other fantasy sports.  One week you are up, the next you can flame out.  That's why, if you want to win in the season long format, you have to be an active manager.

Anyways, here's hoping the guys I pick go crazy on Saturday and Sunday so as to gain a small measure of respect.  Gulp.
