OfflineSome of you might remember a post I listed a little while back; tittled "What's Up With That" where I complained about the low BAs this season. Well guys, it hasn't gotten any better, it's just gotten worse. Now certain top 100 fantasy players are batting even lower then the paltry .220. It's now down to .200 and below for several elite players. Uggla .170, Dunn .176, Mark Reynolds .199, Alex Rios .200, Napolli .213 and Alvarez .208(BAs as of 6-09-11). There are at least 20 more around the .220 mark, to many to list and count.
What in the world is going on? None of the top pitchers are having career years. Though there are some young pitchers that are fooling batters but not enough to constitute these all time low BAs. If anyone has any idea of what's going on please enlighten me because I'm truly stumped.
OfflineActually, if you play this game long enough, you'll see that this is just par for the course. There are ALWAYS guys who underperform…and it happens in every sport.
It's funny to go look at the waiver wire at this point because you'll see all of these Top 100 guys listed there now. Some are injured, so that makes sense, still, if it were pre-season and you saw that list you'd be salivating all the way to the "add" button.
A great example is in fantasy football. I've now come to realize that in everyone's pre-season Top 10 list, there are going to be at least 4 guys who GREATLY underperform their ADP. And that's in the Top 10. You see it every year. Last season, Ray Rice was pretty much a consensus Top 5 pick I believe, maybe just Top 10, but he didn't score any touchdowns last year so his value sank. Looking at the Top 10 in the Sporting News magazine for 2010, you can say that M. Jones-Drew, Rice, Michael Turner, Steven Jackson, DeAngelo Williams, and Frank Gore all underperformed. That's 6 out of 10!
So calm down Roy, it may just be a normal thing. The hard part of course is swallowing your pride and cutting guys you thought would be studs. But personally, I think that makes it more fun…ie…to try to find the next great thing.
OfflineOh, I agree with the fun and challenge of it is to find the next great players first at a low cost. I also agree that a lot of players especially in Football under produced (I fell for the Chris Johnson hype last year). But, In my years of watching baseball I've never experienced seeing so many sluggers with the BA of a pitcher. In all fairness I just started up watching baseball on a regular basis last year picking up from when I watched between the late 80s thru the mid 90s. May be I didn't notice sub and slightly above .200 BAs then.

It really is a strange year in regards to a few players….I mean nobody saw this coming with Adam Dunn, who has been a very steady hitter for a long time now. Pretty much a guy who will walk 100 times, hit 40 bombs, put up a .380 OBP and lots of power/RBI numbers. He has completely fallen off a cliff this year. As has Uggla. And Pujols is even down compared to what everyone expects out of him….although he's been really hot the last month or so.
Seems like a lot of guys are showing a decline this year to one extent or another (most not as dramatic as Dunn/Uggla) but guys like Jeter, ARod, etc. Although I think with Jeter it's his age catching up with him…he's almost 37.
OfflineFantasy play sure does open your eyes to more of the sport then just being a fan, I follow you on that.
Like Bob said, there is just something abnormal about this year.
There is one thing I forgot is that the season is just a week and a half over 2 months young which leaves roughly three fourths of the season remaining so there is still time for some of these guy to get on track. Thanks Guys.
OfflinePoor Dan Uggla
. Seriously, I'm watching the Pads vs. the Braves on the Swinging Frier's' Channel 4. Uggla's up and there is this drunk heckler near the field mic yelling "one, seventy, threeeee!" every time he steps in the batters box to set up. It was kinda funny the first couple of times but Uggla's battling this pitcher all the way to a full count with runners on 2nd and 3rd. Foul after foul, "One, seventy, threeee!', Ugglas turning around after every foul and looking very pissed around behind home plate. Finally he walks, loading the bases.
I really feel bad for him. Usually the guy getting heckled cheated on his wife or juiced or failed several drug tests "Darrrrllllll", but Uggla didn't do anything(no pun intended) to deserve that. I hope Dan pulls out to the .200s, it's gonna be hard with the hole he's dug. He might pull a Jack Clark; who hit somewhere around the .190ish-.200ish with 26ish home runs in his twilight year of 1991 if memory serves me correct. Or in 1991 Rob Deer hit .177ish with 24ish home runs because Dan's still hitting the occasional homer during his struggle.
As a fan of Baseball and a person who genuinely cares for his fellow man or woman I hope Dan can avoid the infamy or at least learn from it

OfflineI kept him on one of my other teams and he earned his way back into my starting lineup beating out a struggling Alberto Callaspo. He's been doing alright too. I think he has four HRs since that heckling Padres fan lit his fire(I think he even homered in his next AB). He seems like he's back to his old self. I think the problem with hitting .175 half of the season is you need a really hot streak to get you past .200 then play at least .250 ball to maintain that average. All in all I think he's getting some really good advice from his coaches. They've stated they want him to play as if he has a clean slate and chalk up the .175 experience as a learning one, and I can't think of any better advice. Yeah Bones, here's to Uggla righting the ship
