OfflineJust posted a spotlight on Ellsbury's achievements this season. What a great fantasy line: 119-32-105-39-.321 Yes, that will get you the comeback player of year award in fantasy and reality after a dismal 18 games played the previous season.
Savvy drafters saw part of this coming. In yahoo leagues, Ellsbury was rated as the #88 overall player. But his 3 category goodness, ie, runs, stolen bases, and batting average, made that seem like a very cautious ranking. Personally I moved him up my draft boards one or two rounds, and ended up with him on all 4 of my private leagues, and my one Roto team this season. I won championships with all 5 teams. Go figure, as he ended up as the #3 overall ranked player in yahoo leagues.
But we only saw part of this coming. NO ONE saw 32 Home Runs and 105 RBI's as part of the 2011 equation. I'm sure many owners who had Jacoby were in the playoffs this season, if not the championship game.
These are the nuggets to look for every season at draft time. My guess is that most sites and magazines will undervalue Buster Posey next year for the same reason as Ellsbury this year, ie, coming off a major injury. I'm already planning on moving the kid up my draft board.
