As I shared in my post about the Yankee pitching pick ups, I was surprised by the negative reactions of Mariner fans.  I realize they know what they lost; but do not know what they are receiving.

How about a #4 hitter to put in the middle of that sad line-up?  Jesus has been a hot name in the Yankee system for 2 years now, and was slated to be New York's DH heading into this year.  He'll probably fulfill that role in Seattle, but he'll bump up in the line-up and have many more opportunities for RBI's than hitting at the bottom of the Yankee order.  I know, I know, the M's were a bad offense last year, but the kid is going to have Ichiro and second year hot prospect Dustin Ackley hitting in front of him, so he's going to get his chances.

The best part is he is catcher eligible, and in the first magazine that I picked up this season they have him ranked #7 for catchers.  Granted he only had 61 at-bats last year, but he smacked 4 home runs and had 12 RBI while posting a .328 average.  There is risk here with so little experience, but he should only cost you a mid-round pick.  There is also great reward possibilities too.  It's your call Mr. Fantasy Manager!

I'll be curious to see how this shakes out in the long run.  I think what Mariners fans don't like (or what I wouldn't like if I were a Mariners fan) is that they traded a guy who has potential to be an ace pitcher for a guy who will DH.  I don't think Montero will stick at catcher, making him a bat only, with no value in the field….if I'm wrong, and he can catch, then it's a much better deal.

Two things to look at in regards to these guys in the short term:

1. How will Pineda hold up in the home run launching pad (and pressure) in NY?

2. How will Montero hit in a terrible lineup?  He would have had a lot of protection and less pressure to perform in NY with all those bats around him…in Seattle, it's a different story.

Yes, great points.  I especially wonder how Pineda will do in NY as a sophmore.  It will help that he is not THE guy.  The Yanks will do well to make him their number 4 guy this year to ease the strain.

As far as Montero,  what pressure he gains in Seattle to perform with less protection, he loses by not playing in the ultimate baseball pressure cooker, i.e., Yankee Stadium.

I've been to Seattle games.  There's more tension in the Starbucks line than anything the crowd does watching a game…..
