Ahhhhhhhhh, Memorial Day and baseball.  Heading out the door to drive to Safeco for the Mariners and the Orioles.

I think this is my first major league game since Coors Field in 2003 or 2004.

Of course, for the geek, the big question is, "What fantasy implications will I walk away with today?"

And yes, I did add SP Fister to one of my teams for added interest….

Hope to have something to report on tonight!

PS:  Yes, M's vs. O's.  If you live by one of the great baseball cities, consider yourself lucky.  I think I'm going to miss the San Francisco Bay Area today.

Wow…I couldn't go that long without a game….although I live about 10 minutes from Kauffman Stadium…so it's easy for me to pop in and see the Royals pretty much anytime.

I hear that.  It has been tough.

In the 80's when I was single, I would drive down to the Bay Area each summer for a slew of games.

In the 90's, I went to Coors Field a lot, even taking kids as part of my "job."  That was tough work.

But since being back in Porltand the past 10 years, it's a lot tougher.  I'm married, have 2 teen age boys, a mortgage, car payment and other bills.  Yesterday's game for instance cost us $225 for 5 people after all was said and done.  I just can't do that anymore.

Especially not for American league games, lol.

And of course, the drive is a killer.  We spent 6 hours round trip on the road.  That was ok in my 20's.  Not so much fun now.

So I do miss living across the Bay from the stadium and going whenever I felt like it.

Consider yourself lucky to be near a major league ballpark!

Heck, consider yourself lucky to be near a major league city.  Portland, quite frankly, is a Cow town when it comes to pro sports.

As I stated, my hope was to get some sort of fantasy goodness out of this trip.

Doug Fister was good.  For one day.  He pitched real well, with 9 K's to his name yesterday.

BUT

My wife asked exactly what we were watching, and I had to say two of the worst hitting teams in baseball.  Cust did get a triple, but that .210 BA, uh, no thank you.  Mark Reynolds jacked another HR, but, again, a bad batting average and lotsa strikeouts with that guy.  Plus his HR was a line-drive just inside the left field foul pole.

Gosh I miss national league parks…….

I like my options with the Angels a half an hour up I-5 and the Padres 25 min. down the I-5. I've gone to more Angel games because of their offence and it's more of a home field with few transplants cheering for the visitors, plus they seem more committed to putting a winning team on the field. The Padres used to be real fun when they where at Qualcomm stadium and owned by John Moores. Moores was a committed owner who had the ticket prices low and a quality team on the field. Moving to Petco was fine for the first few years, then the prices went up a bit. Then last year Moores had to sell the team to a business group(John Elway and his partners). The new owners have done nothing but get rid of good players and raise the ticket prices, that sucks. Now they're talking about getting rid of Bell(the lone All Star), they're just raping the fan by giving us a team with sub par hitting and high ticket prices. I hate John Elway now. Ryan Ludwick as a clean up hitter, come on. I still like the Pads but won't go to a game until Elway and Co. are out. The Angels are a better option for me even if I live in North San Diego County. They are just 5 more minutes of a drive. Even if I do prefer NL ball.

John, I hope your family and you had a good time. I would like to see the Os. To see Wieters, Scott, Reynolds and Jones would be cool. I used to see the O's in the 80's when I would go out to D.C. to stay with my Grandparents. My Grandpa took my to see the O's against the Twins(My Grandpas home team when he lived in Minnesota)in 84. I got to see both Ripken and Puckett as rookies, Puckett hit a HR.

The Royals would be cool to see also, they have a good team this year. MELKY!

Yeah, thanks Roy.  We all had a good time.  It was 50 degrees, the roof was open, it was Memorial Day and we were at a major league game.  We were also with about 20 other folks from our church, so a good time had by all.  I think my 16 year old had the most fun though…as he put it…"I got to spend the whole day with my girlfriend."

But don't be surprised when I share a "Top 10 disappointment list concerning Safeco Field."
