OfflineWe've been posting some advice about getting ready for the playoffs, but now we are down to it. In yahoo leagues for the most part, the playoffs start next week. You need to think about that THIS week.
For example:
1) Really analyze your line-up, starting pitchers, and relief corp. Are these the guys you need to go into battle with next week?
2) Make a decision about those DL guys. Richie Weeks and Kevin Youkilis should come back this week. But there are others, like Jimmy Rollins, who won't. Do you waste space on the bench if you have 2 or 3 guys on the DL? Rollins isn't going to play as much when he comes back, what with the Phillies trying to preserve him for the playoffs and their situation pretty secure. He may be a candidate to drop for a more productive player.
3) Later in the week, you want to check who the 2 start pitchers are that are on the waiver wire for next week. Maybe your 5th, 6th, or 7th starter is worth booting in order to get more K's and two shots at the win column instead of one.
4) SAVE YOUR ADD/DROPS. What I mean is, don't go wasting all your changes early in this week (unless you are fighting to get INTO the playoffs). Wait until later in the week so that you can cover for any injuries that may occur, take into account call-ups (see the Dayan Viciedo Spotlight), look for those 2 start pitchers, and nab a new saves guy if possible.
This last one really helped me this past week. One of my leagues starts the playoffs today. Our trade deadline went up to yesterday, but no one would trade me a relief pitcher. AND THEN….Tony LaRussa gives Jason Motte a save opportunity, AND says he may see more in September. I jettisoned a so-so starting pitcher and made the add. My semi-final opponent (yes, I'm projecting) has Salas as one of his closers. Who knows, maybe I win by getting one more save than him, because Tony gives Motte a save chance and prevents Salas from getting it.
ANYWAYS, it's time to get ready!
OfflineI'm gonna check out Jason Motte but Rollins is the only reason I felt safe enough to trade Tulo. Rollins is one of those players that has always produced when I've needed, like a stolen base to brake a tie in that category. He's what I call my balance player and when my balance players are putting up their numbers across the board is when I usually win. Another "balance player" for me has been CarGo, someone who produces numbers in every hitting category even if they aren't freakishly high numbers. I sure hope Rollins' future isn't too much like you've described it because he's also the catalyst to my Rollins, Victorino and Pence Philly sandwich that has worked so well since I traded for Pence. It's a good thing that our leagues FA pool is deep so that finding a replacement isn't too big of a deal. Some more players that I would consider good balanced players are Shane Victorino, Drew Stubbs(to a lesser extent due to his high K tendencies) and Jacoby Ellsbury and of coarse the prototype, before he got all juiced Barry Bonds(30/30 club, high BA and a gold glove) of coarse going back further there's Mays and Clemente. But, that really is great advice to tackle all of those issues now rather then in the moment when that good replacement might not be there anymore. After what happened to you last year is wisdom we just can't pass up on in our other respective leagues where the stakes of pride are much much higher then in our fun league(not that I don't take our league seriously, it's just different due to all the variables).
P.S. I just got back from checking out Motte and it seems, at least for now, that save opportunity might have been either to keep Salas on his toes, to see what Motte could do in a save situation or Tony La. being unpredictable Tony La. Salas ended up getting the save on Tues. while Motte pitched the 8th for the hold giving up no walks, hits or runs. But then again I've got one save a month Melancon to spare so, hahaha.
