Basically Howard has opted to take roughly $18 million per season until he becomes eligible for free agency after the 2011 season.

Reasonable? Not reasonable?  Should the the Phillies have tried to lock him up longer? Seems like a solid deal considering he could have asked for much more per season.

Perfect topic :)

Yes he should have got more! The Phillies got a heck of a deal. As you said he could get over 20-25 million per year but Im just happy he is in a Phillies uni. I'll take what I can get. Howard has a lot of years left.

I am not so sure Howard would have got more. He is 30 this year isn't he? That isn't that old but 18 mil for 3 years is pretty good and after that he will be on the downside of his career. These players get way too much anyway!! I like Howard this year tho.

I think Howard has more than 3 years before he hits that downside, but you might be right that he might not have got more. That might be why he was good to go with the $54. Everything source I see suggests that he could have got more, though. We will never know now. I like Howard this year – A lot.

It was a perfect trade for both Howard and the Phillies.
